On March 30, 1996 Helen Saarinen, the founding chair of
McMaster's physiotherapy program, lost her courageous battle with
cancer and the physiotherapy profession lost one of
their
strongest leaders. Though many of the current physiotherapy
students at McMaster University never had the privilege of knowing her,
we have all benefited from her visionary work and will continue to do
so as professionals.
As we become practicing
clinicians, we should strive to demonstrate the same compassion, integrity
and enthusiasm that she did during her career. An excellent physiotherapist and educator,
she was also a wonderful human being. All who were blessed with the
honour of knowing her still miss her dearly.
Some people enter our lives
and move our souls to dance.
They awaken us to new
understanding with the passing
whisper of their wisdom.
Some people make the stay more
beautiful to gaze upon.
They stay in our lives for a while,
leave footprints in our hearts,
and we are never, ever the same.
